You Can Actually Love Your Tree to Death

Especially if your tree is a beech, birch, walnut or any of the evergreens - pines, spruces or firs. If you prune these trees too much, leaving less than two-thirds of the live crown, they will hate you for it.
Heavy pruning of older trees of any species can aggravate existing health problems, encourage unwanted sprouting and certainly will add new stresses to an overstressed tree.
Burying the root area with too much mulch or sod is essentially suffocating a tree. Never apply too much mulch around a tree, especially right next to the base of the trunk.   Sod or Mulch that is over 3" deep can be too much to the point of effecting root and bark function.

Some Trees Need Full and Constant Sunlight to Thrive

Some trees, depending on the species, can suffer from too much shade. Simply put, many conifers and hardwood trees have to be in full sunlight most of the day to survive. These trees are what foresters and botanists call "shade intolerant".
Tree species that do not tolerate shade well are pine, many oaks, poplar, hickory, black cherry, cottonwood and willow.
If you don’t have a space in your yard that receives constant sunlight, the best trees for you might be spruce or hemlock, dogwood and most birch and elm trees are shade tolerant.

Only 1% of a Tree is Actually Alive

Parts of a Tree, Use These Tree Parts to Identify a Tree Yep, that’s right, only 1% of a tree is living tissueAs a matter of fact, very little of a tree's volume is composed of living cells. Believe it or not, the major living portion of a growing tree is a thin film of cells just under the bark called the cambium. Other living cells are in fractions of the tree’s root tips, the leaves and its buds.
The rest of the tree is comprised of non-living tissue created by a cambial hardening into non-living wood cells on the inner cambial layer. Sandwiched between the outer cambial layer and the bark is an ongoing process of creating sieve tubes, which transport food from leaves to roots.

Whatever Crosses Your Property Line Belongs to You

According to TN state law - you have the right to trim branches and limbs that extend past your property line. However, the law only allows tree trimming and tree cutting up to the property line. You may not go onto the neighbor's property or destroy the entire tree. If you do harm the tree, you could be found liable for up to three times the value of the tree. Most trees have a replacement value of between $500 and $2500. Some, that are considered ornamental or landmark trees, can have an astonishing value of between $20,000 and $60,000!
So use extreme caution when getting the neighbor’s tree trimmed!
When the tree trunk is divided by the property lines of two or more people, it is referred to as a "boundary tree". In the case of a "boundary tree", all of the property owners own the tree and share responsibility for it. Tree removal without the consent of all the property owners is unlawful.
